Hello everyone

I have been inspired into starting this recent project after talking to one of my best friends. A creative person, she takes pictures that come from her day and uploads them to an album on Facebook. Sometimes they are everyday snapshots of life, other times they are specially designed and shot for the purpose of this album. The whole collection becomes a unique and special timeline of her life, just as it does for the many other people who undertake this project each year.

This idea struck a chord with me and I wanted to do the same, but make it my own. I’m not much of a photography person, even if I do own an SLR. I’m a radio producer so my tools are sounds and who can argue that there are many wonderful sounds in the world! So I decided to start recording a sound a day, from my life, for 2012.

Obviously I’m a bit late to this party, so it won’t technically be 365. I hope you like them though! I will be uploading them to AudioBoo so please follow me on there - http://audioboo.fm/willhahn

Yeah. “What the hell Will?” You must be thinking. Hear me out though.

I have been listening to this song and in the heat of my Star Wars delusions each line is just making me think of the Emperor in a montage sequence building the Death Star. In overalls. Or maybe those jeans with straps, you know what they’re called! Without further ago I present the lyrics, with my own incredibly geek interpretations.

I got my mind set on you

We all know the Emperor was a man obsessed with fear. Spreading it, nurturing it in the hearts of people throughout the Empire. He may have not been able to lift a Star Destroyer with barely a cough of effort but he was a master manipulator. When he’d taken control of the galaxy all he could think about was instilling more fear and getting rid of those pesky rebels. Still, a bit The Shining of him to write it four times.

We don’t really know how much it cost (unless someone has worked it out based on Imperial currency re-enactment - and Hoth knows somebody has) but it cannot have been a cheap job (apart from the defence systems!). A lot of money went into R&D to develop a new weapons system to destroy entire planets, as well as link several hyperdrive systems for a space station. Not to mention the labour costs - although I doubt the Emperor was pro-unionisation. Still, the fact that it took about 20 years to develop and build, based off Luke Skywalker’s age, means that the costs must have spiralled out of original estimates. So I suppose something in Star Wars was realistic. And that last line? Well I’ve already said how Palpatine was obsessive, so you can just imagine him calling the Death Star his “baby”. Ooh, you are the cutest weapon of mass destruction aren’t you? Oooh yes you are! Coochy coochy coo.

What did I tell you about the Emperor calling the Death Star his baby!? See, now I feel totally vindicated. And it DID take time, about 20 years of development and construction… though that didn’t exactly do it right. The first Death Star had very obvious thermal exhaust flaws, but at least the scientific minds did make improvements on the plans initially written by Geonosian technicians. As we all know, the second Death Star was a great improvement and had many millions of tiny exhaust ports in order to prevent a teenage with an X-Wing from destroying it again. Too bad they didn’t account for Ewoks. Patience is a virtue after all. Especially as people kept trying to sabotage its construction!

We can only assume here that the Emperor was talking about the second Death Star, that he can finally really do it and make a Death Star both much larger (900km in diameter) than the first (160km in diameter) and become fully operational when it wasn’t even complete! That’s some achievement. There were many improvements over the original, including a much greater amount of turbolasers and the ability to fire more than once every 24 hours (or “Earth hours” in other less-imaginative science-fiction).

So there we go. Straight from The Emperor’s mind (through his minion George Harrison) to your ears. The song goes on but it’s just a repetition of the earlier lyrics. The Emperor mustn’t have had much to do when he took control other than try to hold on to it, destroy rebel scum and pick out his favourite black robe - apart from casual Fridays when he wore speedos and a wicker hat.

I leave you now with the video of this song, just TRY and watch the video and not imagine Emperor Palpatine sitting in his chair on the second Death Star, or actually building the Death Star in jean overalls in the style of an 80s montage video.

I’ve often looked at people more successful than myself, both famous and people I know, and been envious as them. “Why are they doing so well when I’m not!?” At the age I am now I think I have finally grasped the reason: they actually work hard.

I’ve spent all day playing Rome: Total War, rather than applying for jobs or work experience. It’s no wonder I’m envious of people talking about their first day at Absolute Radio or tweeting about their professionally looking website. Have I done anything productive today? No. I hate to think that I only ever have false epiphanies, so from tomorrow onwards I’m going to have to abandon my life of being a total fucking slacker and get my finger out. I don’t want to be stuck at home with my parents and working full-time at Sainsbury’s. I’m a Radio Producer.

Rihards aka apofiss does amazing arts of cats and classic vidya gaem characters, but his depictions of Pikachu are especially electrifying. Get it… because Pikachu is, ah forget it. I think he hold the distinguished title of being the only artist on earth to draw Pikachu all drunky.

Google+ has failed

When it was launched not too long ago, some people said that it could be the end of facebook. Google has certainly come to dominate other areas of the Internet over the past years - mail, YouTube, google chrome. But social interaction is nowhere more lucrative and popular than on Facebook, so it stands to reason that google would want to take this over too.
I was one of those people who was glad at the coming of google+. I have had to add people as friends on facebook despite not really liking them, but situations at the time demanded I add them out of politeness. Nobody wants to run into someone and have to explain why they didn’t add someone on facebook. At least in Britain, we’re just too polite. The new features of google+ allowed me to start again, and have those only who I like as friends, while adding some I only needed for work to a “professional” circle. However take-up has been slow on google+ across the board it would seem, and many people don’t see the point in moving from Facebook to, well, another Facebook.
Therein lies the problem, explained neatly in a line from the film The Social Network: “If you wanted to invent facebook, you’d have invented Facebook”. Quite simply google+ isn’t different enough to draw people away from facebook. Facebook is too big now to be beaten by competition. That’s not to say that Facebook is too big to fail, just that it will only do so if IT self-destructs somehow, or ruins itself. I don’t see that happening anytime soon.
So what does that mean for me? Well as google+ has failed or will just do so soon, I’ll just have to do another “purge” of unnecessary friends on Facebook. Don’t take it personally if you’re removed, I just don’t think we’re really friends anymore. We either don’t see each other anymore or don’t talk, or we were never really friends anyway.
Nothing lasts forever. Except it would seem, Facebook.

I cannot recommend this programme enough. A subject everyone will have nostalgic feelings for, the sounds of ice cream van chimes will take you away to your childhood. At the same time you’ll learn some really interesting things about ice cream vans: for instance did you know the lead singer of Status Quo used to be an ice cream van man?

Final Project 6 - Who's My Audience?

This is something I’ve been thinking about whilst doing research for my essay. I thought I had a pretty good grasp on who I was making my programme for when I wrote my synopsis. However it was a while after that when I actually started making my programme and so things had changed in that time.

It all comes from who I am. I am a hobbyist. I feel like there is a stigma against people who play the game when they grow up, so I decided to go on a one-man mission to educate the people of the world who didn’t play - so at least I could come out of hiding and tell the world that I played with toy soldiers. I’ll admit that one several occasions I have “taken a break” from the hobby because I was worried about what people have thought of me, though this was mostly when I was a kid.

However, when I was doing my vox pops for the beginning of the programme it came to light that several of the “everyday” people had been hobbyists in the past. This meant that there is a high chance that people who are listening will be players or ex-players. This made me wonder, who am I making my programme for? I would like to think that my programme will bring some people back into the hobby, but that’s not who I’m trying to reach. I’ve been looking at my piece and wondering if I’m being too self-indulgent, and that those not familiar with the hobby won’t know what I’m talking about. This is why I’ve decided to include my original “what is wargaming “vox pops from wargamers, so there is an element of eduction in my programme.
